Teachers are protesting on May 1 demanding higher pay and better working conditions.
They marched towards the Ministry of Education, holding a banner in their hands that reads “There is no quality education without well-paid education”, “Reward at the end of the year for teachers”, “Let’s make the teaching profession more attractive”.
One of the union representatives said that the government should take urgent measures to improve the state of education in Albania.
He said that education needs a budget of 5% of GDP, as he added that if there are no dignified salaries, the teaching profession will not be in demand by young people.
“Our main request is for the government to take urgent measures to improve the state of education in Albania. We, the Education Unions, have requested in all the meetings we have held that without a 5% GDP budget for education, there can be no quality education in Albania without well-paid teachers.
If there are no dignified salaries then the teaching profession will not be a profession sought by young people. Those who go to the teaching branch are those with lower grades”, said the representative of the union.
