The head of the Movement for National Development, Dashamir Shehi, has stated that Albania is always looking for a better electoral system.
Shehi made the comments in the “Barometer” show on Euronews Albania, where he said that our country does not have an old democratic culture.
He also said that democracy in Albania is fragile, only 30 years old and today’s politicians in Albania are from the time of Enver Hoxha.
“This is the popular opinion of the citizens. We cannot expect citizens to have a greater knowledge of institutions. It diverts what is the main problem more. People express themselves in their own way. Governance is one thing, Parliament is another.
People wear it the old fashioned way that is power. When in fact the power is in the Parliament and some of the main powers of the country originate from the Parliament. But the Parliament is not only the government, it covers a number of other institutions. Because governments will come and go. Why go to elections, go to define a governing line.
Parliament is also the political and legal interpreter of the Constitution. Governments will come and go, but governments have many rights. If we return to the principle that we have gathered to discuss, of course the electoral system is not important at all. Because we have an old democratic tradition, so the system falls down, while in Albania it is different.
Because how many years of democracy do we have in Albania? 30 years, a generation. I am from the first generation. We are from the old time of Enver Hoxha, we are only one generation away and we are constantly looking for a better political generation”, said Shehi.
