Boxer Florian Marku has left his cell in Germany, where he was arrested a few days ago due to an unserved sentence in Greece, sources tell journalist Ernest Koçi of Report TV. Marku’s history with justice dates back 14 years and it seems that the Greek state is seeking his extradition.
Marku will now await the decision at liberty and cannot leave Germany without waiting for the court to decide and the possibility of extradition to Greece. Nearly six months is the remaining sentence that Marku has not served for a fight that occurred 14 years ago in Thessaloniki.
The incident and the troubles for the Albanian boxer
The 32-year-old was traveling from England to Germany on December 9, when he was notified of an arrest warrant from the Greek state at the border. This is a matter from many years ago when Florian Marku was 18 years old. At that time, due to a fight in Thessaloniki, he was arrested on charges of assault and illegal possession of a weapon. The boxer was later sentenced to 7 years in prison, but served only 1 and a half years.
However, a few years ago the case was appealed and according to recent changes in Greek law he must serve at least 1/3 of the sentence.
The defense was told that Florian Marku must serve the remainder of the sentence and the boxer himself accepted it. Sources close to the 32-year-old’s family say that Marku must serve about 6 months in prison to call the case closed.
