The marriage of a 14-year-old woman to a 34-year-old woman shocked public opinion and once again highlighted the social problems of society. Sociologist Gëzim Tushi, in the “7pa5” show, analyzed the event and the phenomenon, for which the family and the institutions are responsible.
“The girl is first a victim of the family and secondly a victim of the Albanian social authority institutions that do not play their role properly”, he said, referring first to the school. “Albanian society, with all the developments, still has a cut off language, especially in villages to communicate with children to create education on marriage. We really act like we are a shameful society, but on the other hand we are being rotted by such phenomena that have to do with the degradation of the system of discipline of sexual life and we must be real”, he said, adding that such phenomena only spread as long as they are not treated.
He emphasized that girls often see marriage as a ‘salvation’ from the many social problems they face in their families.

He added that rural areas still have taboos regarding the treatment and education of children on marriage or sexuality.
“In rural areas, there is an opinion that the time of sexual maturity is also the time of marriage, this is a fatal mistake, unacceptable for today’s modern society. The age of sexual maturity is not the age of marriage. Some of them [marriages] are realized not because of love, a love with such deep age differences is a paradoxical love. It cannot be a lasting relationship,” he said.
However, he emphasized that girls in society have been emancipated, thus pushing the age limit for marriage.
“If we do an in-depth analysis of this phenomenon from a sociological point of view, we have a double phenomenon of society regarding marriage. On the one hand, due to the emancipation of society, demographic and sociological developments and especially the social emancipation of Albanian women, we have a tendency to increase the marriage age of women”, he said, comparing it to 30 years ago. . “Today’s women do not have marriage as the only and biggest priority in their lives”, he emphasized, underlining that the increase in the marriage age limit is something positive.
