The ship loaded with 2100 tons of industrial waste suspected to contain dangerous substances arrived at the port of Durrës today around 07:30.
The shipment, which is believed to contain waste from the ash of metallurgical chimneys, had left Albania in July of this year for Thailand, which rejected it after the alarm given by the non-governmental organization ‘Basel Action Network’ based in Seattle, United States United.
After 3 months of sailing at sea, as far as distant Asia, containers of industrial waste, suspected to be toxic dust coming from the chimneys of metallurgical factories, arrived loaded on a ship from Gioia Tauro in Italy.
Meanwhile, the Durres Prosecutor’s Office, with a decision dated yesterday, October 27, 2024, sent an execution order to: the Durres Port Authority; Captain’s Detail; Durres Customs Branch; the Local Directorate for Border and Migration Durrës; The Local Directorate of the Durrës Police, the Directorate of Customs Investigation and for the information of the General Maritime Directorate of Tirana and the General Directorate of Customs of Tirana for the seizure of containers in connection with criminal proceedings.
“In connection with this letter, we are sending you for execution the Prosecutor’s Decision dated 26.10.2024 for the seizure of containers in connection with criminal proceedings no. 1596/2024. All the subjects charged with the implementation of this decision should sign the record of the seizure, in which all the actions to be carried out in the execution of the decision and the exact description of the items should be described in detail.
Measures should be taken to deposit the seized items in a safe place in terms of environmental and physical security, through 24-hour camera monitoring. Seized items should be kept in the condition they are in without proceeding with their opening.
The practice held for the execution should be immediately sent to the Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance of the General Jurisdiction of Durrës”.
