The commissioner for EU enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, presented the Union’s plan for the countries of the Western Balkans. In his speech at the Summit held in Tirana, he said that the economies of the countries of the region will double in the next 10 years.
According to him, this plan will work only if the countries of the Western Balkans will implement the rules of the European Union.
He emphasized that he must move forward with the reforms that implement the plan, while he emphasized that “if you accept all EU rules, you can become part of the market before you become a member state”.
“Even though we are approaching the end of our mandate, I want to leave something behind, something serious, something that is tangible, something that is sensitive for the short- and medium-term aspect of expansion.
This integration process means that the economies of the Western Balkans and the societies of the Western Balkans are integrated into the EU, which means that the EU must also offer all the benefits that membership brings before your countries become EU member states. So this is our idea and what we bring with the growth plan.
We are confident that you will receive the benefits of this plan, which has the potential to contribute to the doubling of the economies of the Western Balkans.
Already for the growth plan, all the countries of the region have taken it into their hands and want the ownership of this plan. The region has to move forward itself quickly and this means achieving results in those reforms that make this plan functional. This plan will work if it applies EU rules, in case you accept all these rules and can become part of the market before you become a member state”, said Commissioner Varhely.
