Convict escapes from Shenkoll prison, suffers from mental health problems

An unusual event has occurred at Shenkollit Prison in Lezha, where a prisoner has escaped from this security institution.

The escapee is Daut Laze, and it is learned that he had been arrested since November 16, 2021 and was convicted of domestic violence.

A reaction has also come from the General Directorate of Prisons, which informs that on November 4 of last year, the Court of Tirana had imposed the medical measure “Compulsory treatment in a medical institution” on him,

Laze was admitted to the treatment room of Shenkollit Prison, where he is suspected of having taken advantage of the opportunity to escape. From preliminary investigations, it appears that he has climbed the wall on the southern side of the prison and escaped.

His absence from prison was ascertained this morning during the change of shifts and the appeal at Shenkollit Prison in Lezha.

“After an immediate check by the police staff at the institution, it was noticed that this citizen with compulsory treatment has used the possible spaces that are within the parameters of the special medical institution to leave the institution’s enclosure,” the General Directorate of Prisons announced today.

It is suspected that Daut Laze suffers from mental health problems. So far, there is no trace of him, as the Police have launched searches for his location and capture.

An investigation has also been launched into the full circumstances of his escape from prison. It is learned that the General Director of Prisons, Klevis Qose, has also arrived at the Shenkoll prison.

On February 4, 2025, in the early hours of the morning, during the change of shifts and the appeal at the Lezhë Prison, the absence of the patient Daut Hysen Laze, born on August 30, 1976 in Çorovodë and resident of Tirana, was noted.

He was arrested on November 16, 2021. With decision no. 528, act dated November 4, 2024, the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction of Tirana imposed on him the medical measure “Compulsory treatment in a medical institution”, according to Article 46 of the Criminal Code.

After an immediate check by the police staff at the institution, it was observed that this citizen with compulsory treatment has used the possible spaces that are within the parameters of the special medical institution to leave the institution’s perimeter.

Currently, camera footage is being analyzed to shed light on the full dynamics of the incident.

The Albanian National Police Agency has been notified of the incident and intensive work is being done in collaboration with police structures to capture him.
