Erion Braçe, a member of the Socialist Party (SP) spoke on the ‘Now’ show on Euronews Albania regarding the campaign for the May 11 elections and its internal battles.
In discussions about Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, his position and the fact that he is a person under investigation, Braçe emphasized that above all, he must be respected since he is still presumed innocent.
“Veliaj is a person under investigation and deserves to be respected in relation to the Constitution, so he is presumed innocent until a final decision of the Court. This should apply to everyone, including Berisha and Meta. The latter, unlike Veliaj, is a person under investigation, there is an accusation against him, and Meta is too, both are presumed innocent.
Interference in such processes is excessive. We need to learn where politicians should do politics and not ‘whip’ the judiciary. “The justice bodies must do their job in accordance with the law, to guarantee a fair and equal process,” said the SP MP.
Asked if it would be a different standard if Veliaj, while he is under investigation, were to step down from his post, Braçe replied that this is an individual matter.
“It is something personal. But in relation to this, another question arises, what if the investigations into Veliaj result in the impossibility of bringing charges? So, in this country there is a thin line separating justice from lynching,” said Erion Braçe.
