The Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organized Crime arrested on Sunday evening in Durrës the former deputy of the Socialist Party for that city, Jurgis Çyrbja, on suspicion of “active corruption in elections, supporting the perpetrator of the crime and trading state secrets”.

The news was confirmed by SPAK sources, who said that Çyrbja was arrested today by the state police with “the security measure of arrest in prison set by the Special Court of the First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime for three charges” .

While according to reliable sources it is unofficially learned that Çyrbja has maintained contacts and communicated through the “Sky Ecc” application with persons of criminal groups during the time he was a member of the Assembly.

His arrest is related to investigations into a powerful criminal group. Simultaneously with him, another person was arrested today for the same issue, while a third person was declared wanted.

At the same time, SPAK is pursuing another case, for which the former MP Çyrbja was sued by the Democratic Party about 7 years ago for abuse of office. It is about the documentation related to four different properties during the time he ran Durrës Mortgage.

A week ago, the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) notified him of the abuse of office charge, one day after handing over the mandate of the deputy.

Within two weeks, the political career and relations of MP Çyrbja with the judiciary were rapidly changed. On Tuesday, October 8, he was called to SPAK, where he stayed for over 7 hours, the next day he handed over his mandate as a member of parliament, on Friday, October 11, he was charged with abuse of office in the Mortgage Bank, while a week later he was arrested and imprisoned for 3 charges many times more serious.

He initially said that he was handing over the mandate for health reasons. Çyrbja has not commented on whether he accepts the charges or not, but he affirmed to the media a week ago that he would appear before justice whenever he was summoned.

Thirty-nine-year-old Jurgis Çyrbja, born in Shijak, was completing his second term as deputy of the Durrës District since 2017.

He was a lawyer and lecturer at the University of Durrës after completing his law studies in 2010, to then become the head of the Real Estate Registration Office in Durrës in 2013-2016, when it seems that he connected, both with politics and with suspicious persons from the world of crime./VOA
